Turn the Space Under Your Deck Into a Dry Room
Most raised decks in Salt Lake City have a patch of wasted, dripping dirt underneath them. An under deck ceiling system fixes that. Panels go up under the joists, water gets caught and carried off, and the ground below stays dry enough for furniture, a hot tub, or the stuff you have been storing in the garage. Jeremy measures and installs it himself.

A Second Patio You Already Paid For
If your house sits on a slope, and a lot of Salt Lake City houses do, the deck off the back door is probably eight or ten feet above grade. That leaves a footprint the size of a small living room sitting underneath it, doing nothing. It gets rained on through the deck boards, it gets snow melt all winter, and it grows the kind of damp that eats stored wood and rusts anything metal.
An under deck installation closes that ceiling in. We hang a panel system directly under the deck joists, pitched so water runs one direction instead of pooling, and finish it out so the space below reads as a room rather than a crawl area. Once it is dry down there, people use it. Outdoor sectionals, a grill that does not have to be dragged under cover, a hot tub that stays clean, bikes and yard gear that no longer take up half the garage.
The other half of the value is invisible. Every rain and every thaw, water runs between your deck boards and lands on the framing below. Joists, beams, hangers, and the ledger where the deck meets the house all take that wetting over and over. Utah gets long dry stretches and then a hard soak, which is exactly the cycle that opens checks in the wood and lets rot start. Capping the underside keeps that framing dry, and dry framing lasts.
The ceiling and the water handling work together. Panels catch it, and the under deck drainage side moves it to a gutter and downspout at the low edge. If your existing gutters need to be part of that run, we handle that too on the gutter replacement side.

How We Build the Ceiling Underneath
We start on top of the deck, not under it
Before anything gets hung, Jeremy looks at the deck itself. Board spacing, how the framing is fastened, whether the ledger flashing at the house was ever done right, and where the ground falls away. A deck with a soft rim joist or a ledger that has been drinking water for ten years needs that addressed first. We tell you what we find and show you photos rather than covering a problem with a ceiling.
Setting the slope
The panel run gets pitched toward one edge so water always has somewhere to go. This is the part that separates a system that works from one that drips in the middle of your patio table in year two. We snap the pitch across the whole span, account for any beam that interrupts it, and pick the low edge based on where the water can safely leave the house.
Hanging the panels
Panels fasten up under the joists and lock to each other so the seams shed rather than collect. Around posts, stairs, and any penetration through the deck, the panels get cut and flashed instead of caulked and hoped for. Lighting, fans, or a ceiling fan box can be planned into the layout, so tell us early if you want power down there.
The finish and the leave-behind
Trim closes the perimeter, the collection channel ties into the downspout, and the site gets cleaned the way we clean a roof: nothing left on the ground, nothing left in the yard. Then we run water on it while you watch, because the only proof that matters is watching it drain. Finished work from around the valley is in the gallery, and you can reach us any time through the contact page.
What People Actually Put Down There
Hot tubs are the most common. A tub under an open deck fills with grit, leaves, and roof runoff, and the cover takes a beating from snow load. Under a finished ceiling it stays clean and the equipment stays dry. After that it is outdoor seating, a shaded dining area for July afternoons, and storage that would otherwise live in the garage: patio cushions, mowers, snow gear, kayaks.
Because the ceiling blocks direct sun as well as water, the space below stays noticeably cooler than the deck above it, which matters in a Salt Lake City summer more than people expect.
Where We Do This Work
Royal Dane Roofing is a residential company covering Salt Lake City and roughly fifty miles out from it, which takes in the rest of Salt Lake County plus Davis, Weber, Utah, Tooele, Summit, and Morgan counties. The full list is on the service areas page.
We are family owned and not the biggest outfit in the valley, and that is on purpose. Jeremy is on every job. If you want a straight answer about whether your deck is a good candidate, call (801) 750-4243 or book an assessment and he will come look at it.
Under Deck Questions, Answered Straight
What does an under deck ceiling cost?
It depends on the square footage under the deck, how high off the ground it sits, how many posts and stairs interrupt the span, and whether the framing needs repair before we cover it. A simple rectangle over flat ground is a different job than a wrapped deck on a hillside. Book a free roof assessment and you get a firm written number for your actual deck, not a range off a price sheet.
Will this work on a deck I already have?
Usually yes. Most existing raised decks take a panel system fine. What we check first is the condition of the joists, the beam, and the ledger board at the house. If any of that is soft or improperly flashed, it gets fixed before the ceiling goes up. Covering rot is the one thing we will not do.
Do I need drainage too, or is the ceiling enough?
The ceiling catches the water. Something still has to carry it away, or it just runs off the low edge and lands in one spot against your foundation. That is what the under deck drainage side handles: pitch, collection, and a downspout that takes it clear of the house. We almost always do the two together.
How long does the installation take?
Most single-level decks are a one or two day job once material is on site. Larger wrapped decks, or ones where framing repairs are needed first, run longer. You will have the schedule before we start, and if weather is going to interrupt we call and move the date rather than working through it.
Can it handle Utah snow?
The load that matters is on the deck above, which is designed to carry it. What lands under the ceiling is melt water working its way through the boards, and that is exactly what the system is pitched to move. We size the collection and the outlet for a spring melt, not a light drizzle.
Do you do this on commercial buildings?
No. Royal Dane Roofing is residential only, by choice. Houses and townhomes across the Wasatch Front are all we take on, which is part of why Jeremy can be on every job instead of running crews from an office.
